With the development of science, technology, and industry, various types of motors have emerged. At first glance, they may all seem to serve a unified purpose, but in fact, different types are available for different applications. Some are designed primarily for precise control, with power output serving as an auxiliary control signal to meet the demands of precision manufacturing; others are focused on delivering high power output. Let's take a look at the types of motors available.

Servo Motors: This is a very common type of motor, also referred to as a servo motor – a fitting name given its powerful capabilities. It can convert an input voltage signal into specific mechanical motion.

AC Motors: These are machines used to convert between mechanical energy and AC electrical energy. Due to the tremendous development of AC power systems, AC motors have become the most widely used type of motor. Compared with DC motors, AC motors have no commutator (see commutation in DC motors), making them simpler in structure, easier to manufacture, more robust, and suitable for high-speed, high-voltage, high-current, and high-capacity applications. AC motors cover an extremely wide power range, from a few watts to hundreds of thousands of kilowatts, or even over one million kilowatts. By the early 1980s, the largest turbo-generators had reached 1.5 million kilowatts.

DC Motors: These can convert DC electrical energy into mechanical energy or mechanical energy into DC electrical energy. They are machines that achieve mutual conversion between DC electrical energy and mechanical energy. When operating as a motor, they are DC motors that convert electrical energy into mechanical energy; when operating as a generator, they are DC generators that convert mechanical energy into electrical energy.

Stepper Motors: This type offers significant advantages due to its exceptionally high precision. It can accurately convert input signals into various useful outputs, precisely control angles and frequencies, adjust speed, change sequences, and more. Stepper motors are widely used in many industrial fields, exerting a strong influence and meeting various application requirements to achieve desired results.

In fact, motor classification goes beyond these types. Motors can be further subdivided into various categories based on structure and working principles, such as DC motors, asynchronous motors, and synchronous motors. Since their operating principles and applications differ, it is important to understand the distinctions between them and the intended purpose before making an appropriate selection.
